It impacts urban and rural communities, the agriculture industry, water and electric utilities, public health, transportation, jobs and more. In 2006, Congress passed the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) Act of 2006, which directs NIDIS to develop and “provide a national drought early warning information system.” NIDIS was reauthorized in 2014 and 2019. Its mission is to help the nation proactively manage drought risks and impacts and improve long-term drought resilience. To fulfill this mission, NIDIS studies and addresses the impacts of drought by collecting reliable data, communicating relevant information, and developing innovative tools and resources for public and management use. For more information about NIDIS, visit the U.S. Drought Portal. ## This Dataset NIDIS is an aggregation point for a lot of drought-related data that might otherwise be better captured in dedicated datasets. This dataset is a collection of any fragments that are uniquely held, collected, or curated within NIDIS, starting with a dump of the [google cloud bucket](https://console.cloud.google.com/storage/browser/noaa-nidis-drought-gov-data). The google cloud bucket organized datasets by format rather than subject, so e.g. it collects all `cog`-format data by month. It also contains a directory `current-conditions` with all the current time interval's derivative data (usually daily). Since that data is derived and recreated every day, it isn't all that useful in archival form, so **`current-conditions` is omitted from the upload.** The remainder of the bucket is present, with each leaf subdirectory compressed to minimize the number of files and optimize the chunking in the torrent.
